Do třetice se setkáváme s policistou Johnem McClanem, tentokrát v New Yorku. Žena ho opustila, kvůli pití se ocitl ve výslužbě a kolegové si z něho spíš utahují, než aby si ho vážili. Ale to se záhy změní, protože terorista, který vyhazuje do vzduchu budovy velkoměsta, chce Johnovu hlavu.
