Davida Galea, muže pevných morálních zásad a kultivovaného profesora filosofie, studenti velice obdivují. Profesor Gale se zapojil do hnutí, které sleduje všechny aspekty a dopady soudních rozhodnutí, v nichž padne trest smrti. Je zásadním kritikem „absolutního trestu“. Podivnou souhrou okolností je tento výjimečný člověk sám odsouzen za znásilnění a vraždu a v cele smrti čeká na popravu. Tři dny před jejím termínem se profesor rozhodne dát exkluzivní rozhovor ambiciózní reportérce Bitsey Bloomové a zveřejnit svůj příběh. Souboj s časem a honba za pravdou může začít. Z Bitsey i z jejího asistenta se stávají opravdoví detektivové, kteří nakonec odhalí celou záhadu kolem profesora Galea.
