V roce 1973 přichází společnost Filmation Asociates s nápadem natočit přímé pokračování původní hrané série se vším, co k ní patřilo. Všechno, co bylo v hraném seriálu, mělo být i v seriálu animovaném s vyladěním všech detailů. Animované postavy byly dabovány svými živými protějšky. Jediná postava, která se v animované verzi neobjevila byl Pavel Chekov.
